About Dianne

Hi, I’m Di Rayson.

I’m an Associate Professor of Theology and Ethics, with research interests in ecotheology, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Oceanic epistemologies.

I hold a PhD in Theology from the University of Newcastle, along with Masters degrees in Theology (with Distinction) and Public Health.

Before moving into academic theology, I enjoyed a varied career in Public Health and Public Policy, working across the Pacific and Northern Territory of Australia, as well as in consultant research.

My Australian base is on Awabakal Country in NSW. Beyond my academic work, I’m a cellist, singer, and gardener.

My Work

How can Christianity contribute meaningfully to climate action? How might the church understand and respond to climate change and the worsening effects of global heating? And what can Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s theology offer us as we confront these challenges? My research and writing explore these questions, bringing theology, ethics and environmental concerns into conversation.

I’m particularly interested in the role of religion as an important, yet often overlooked, influence within climate politics and our responses to the ecological crisis. As a public theologian, lecturer and preacher, I draw on Bonhoeffer’s theology to engage with contemporary issues, challenge established ways of thinking, and support the church in responding thoughtfully and practically to the world around us.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands, sea, and sky in which I live and work, the unceded Country of Biripi and Awabakal peoples. I acknowledge and appreciate their care for this land and their hospitality to those of us who came much later.
I pay respect to Elders past and present, and listen to and amplify their voices.

Interested in having me come and speak? I’m available for university seminars, public lectures, and church workshops and sermons.

I also do media interviews and written commentary on religion, ethics, and current events.
